Restitution and Contrition (5521) Kickbacks, donkey paws and past reveries.

Artist Notes:

  • During this year I met a young student who told me, his greatest aspiration in life was, he wanted to be the greatest grandfather in the world one day. He was from a city called Busan. He said it was the most beautiful city in the world. He changed my life in an instance. He valued his grandfather to such an extent that he, wanted to fashion his life according to that.
  • I also went with my husband on a trip with Mr. Lee, my husband’s co-teacher.  We drove past almond trees in bloom.  We visited a tiny church in the mountains, outside Geochang – Gun in South Korea.  It was spring, I wanted to pray for my family.

  • I had brought my grandfather’s service records with.  He was a war veteran and accountant during the 2nd World War. He was disinherited by his family for marrying my grandmother who was not from his country.  In Geochang – Gun we prayed with the congregation that God would hear our prayers that the curse of war and pain, and trauma would not rest upon our family because of our families having been soldiers during the war. Grandpa always said, he was a victim, and said ‘peacemakers will inherit heaven’.
  • During this service, I had asked the reverend, if we could play this beautiful song: Halleluja BY Anneli Van Rooyen in Afrikaans.

  • This artwork was started in a small town, Geochang – Gun, in South Korea.  It is also where the story was written.
  • It is a picture about remorse, confession, forgiveness, and restitution across time. A place where an elevated soul finds itself, on its way to purification. In Geochang – Gun there is a big water wheel in the mountains. I went on a trip and found this water wheel – with beautiful flowers, which healed my soul, elsewhere too.
  • See the video of the water wheel fountain on the main page ‘footer’ of the blog.

  • The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.[a]
